Type of Volcano: Composite Volcanoes

Hello! In the past lesson, We discussed about Cinder Volcano that have many examples. Let's move on and know what composite volcano is and we'll show some pictures:

WHAT IS COMPOSITE VOLCANO?

  • A composite volcano is also commonly called a Stratovolcanoes that composed of lava flows and other ejecta in alternate layers, the strata that give rise to the name.

  • Stratovolcanoes form on the continental side of a subduction zone where the melting oceanic crust forms pools of molten rock in a magma chamber.

  • The magma, molten rock in the magma chamber is lighter than the volcano rocks that surround it. The magma works its way to the summit where it erupts as tephra or in thick lava flows.

  • When a composite volcano becomes dormant, erosion begins to destroy the cone. As the cone is stripped away, the hardened magma filling the conduit (the volcanic plug) and fissures (the dikes) becomes exposed, and it too is slowly reduced by erosion.

Examples of Composite Volcano:

Mt. Fuji is one of the e.g. of Stratovolcano

These volcanoes are built up by many layers/strata of previous eruptions. These volcanoes produce viscous, thick lava flows and they typically cool and harden before they can spread and flow.

Mt. Kenya image volcano

Mount Kenya is a stratovolcano that arose over 3 million years ago. Its last eruption was between 2.6 and 3 million years ago. The volcano rose as high as 19,700 feet (6,000 meters) before being eroded to its present height.

Image of Mt. Pinatubo

Mount Pinatubo is an active stratovolcanic caldera in the Zambales Mountains, located on the tripoint boundary of the Philippine provinces of Zambales, Tarlac and Pampanga, all in Central Luzon on the northern island of Luzon.
